PSU News and commentary
Penn State visits Iowa this weekend in a Primetime matchup to open the Big Ten Conference play.
I'm scared. I'll say it. I'm nervous. Weird things happen under the lights @ Iowa. I don't want to talk about it. No bad mojo. Penn State has looked HOT these past 3 weeks. Now it's time for the real test stepping into Big Ten play. No more 56-0 shutouts are gonna happen. (I mean hopefully they will, but I'm not that confident). Penn State is motivated and ready to roll. Last season was all about redemption and the climb and we just kept the magic going. Now it's something else. Proving ourselves. Show them why we belong here. Why last season wasn't a fluke. Why we deserve a spot in the Playoff. This teams got a lot to play for and I LOVE IT. But seriously, this game will be won in the first half. If Penn State can find it's groove early and jump out to a lead, i feel very confident about this game. If Iowa leads at the half and puts PSU on it's heels, I feel less confident, but hopefully PSU will find that 2016 2nd Half Magic. Penn State 38 Iowa 17. Pick's Picks: SU: Penn State ATS: Penn State -12.5 O/U: 52

No. 5 Ranked Penn State takes on Georgia State in a rare non-conference 7:30 night Game at Beaver Stadium. Penn State takes on Georgia State, after beating in-state rival Pitt to move to 2-0 on the season, and this one looks easy folks. Probably the easiest "W" on Penn State's schedule this year, look for Penn State to demolish Georgia State (See: Akron 52-0) especially under the lights. Penn State's starters will most likely be pulled in the 3rd quarter to give them rest before starting B1G play next week @Iowa. But that shouldn't be a problem. Penn State should probably be covering the -37.5 points by then. The main focus of the game should be fine tuning. Trace looked a little out of his element last week and same with Penn State's pass rush. Penn State needs to look sharp heading into conference play, and this is a great game to settle the boys down and get them focused again. PREDICTION: PENN STATE: 49 Georgia State: 3 BETS: Penn State Straight Up I'm not confident at all on the spread or O/U this game, but I'll throw it picks out there anyway.... Penn State to cover -37.5 Under 55 Season Records: SU: 2-0 ATS: 1-1 O/U: 2-0 #4 Penn State takes 0n in-state rival Pitt this Saturday at 3:30 in Beaver Stadium. Penn State is looking for revenge this weekend vs Pitt, there is no hiding that. Last year's loss, the one that kept us from the playoffs, really stings for the fans and the team. Penn State looked impressive on all sides of the ball last week, with the 52-0 beat down of Akron. Look for james Franklin to once again not take his foot of the gas until the bitter end of this one. PSU wants revenge, PSU wants to impress rankings / committees, PSU wants all the stats for Barkley. i mean come on.... they already launched his Heisman Campaign. Look for Penn State to run up the score on the Panthers when they can. Speaking of the Panthers....they looked TERRIBLE last week and needed OT to knock of Youngstown State. Penn State SHOULD put the beatdown on them. SCORE PREDICTION: PSU: 45 PITT: 13 PSU WILL COVER -21 UNDER 66.5 (haven't loved either O/U this year) SEASON RECORD SO FAR: SU: 1-0 ATS: 1-0 O/U: 1-0 Penn State opens up the 2017 season vs the Akron Zips, Saturday at Noon at Beaver Stadium: Penn State should be in for a cake walk tomorrow vs Akron. Look for the starters to be pulled early in this one and see some back ups and 2nd stringers get some reps. Akron should be no challenge for Saquon and Trace, even if the offense falls into its 2016 ways of not starting the game until the 2nd half. Both should have great games and neither should be playing in the 4th quarter. This is technically like a pre-season game. A factor to pay attention to will be the weather: the forecast calls for some cold and rain all day Saturday in Happy Valley which could make for some short punts, sloppy plays and some dropped passes / fumbles. As of right now Bovada LV Sportsbook has Penn State as a 31 point favorite and the Total being 0/U 65. In perfect weather conditions I would take Penn State to cover all day, but I think the weather may bring the spread closer to 31 where I wouldn't be 100% confident, but I'd lean more towards the PSU cover than against it. I would most likely bet the under on 65. No way is Akron putting up more than 17 (and I think thats a stretch) and PSU will pull the starters early. Making this probably less than a 50 point blowout. Still look for the Nittany Lions to win this one easily. PSU: 45 Akron: 13 PSU -31 Under 65 Penn State Football guess who's back.... Coming into the season off a loss sounds bad, then you remember you lost in a close one in the Granddaddy of them All, and are reigning the Big Ten Champions. Penn State starts the season highly regarded and highly ranked Pre-Season #6 with a lot to expectations to live up to. The schedule this year is much tougher than last year, and the bar has obviously been raised. Of course the Lions should start the season 3-0 this year, with a nice payback win against Pitt in Beaver Stadium, but after that only a few are truly a guarantee. Penn State opens its in conference play at Iowa, who they blew out last season at Beaver Stadium 41-14. But playing as a top ranked team in Iowa has haunted the Nittany Lions before....the last time Penn State was ranked in the Top 10 before last year....#4 Ranked PSU fell to Iowa 21-20 in 2009. With other away games @Northwestern, @Ohio State, @Michigan State, and @Maryland, none of these games will be cake-walks, with the exception of maybe Maryland. Penn State did beat Ohio State in Beaver Stadium last year, but it's a much more daunting task playing in the 'Shoe and when Urban Meyer's squad is looking for revenge. Penn State's season really lies in it's "Death Row" stretch in late Oct. when they face Michigan at home, Ohio State on the road and then Michigan State on the road in 3 straight weeks. I like Penn State to beat Michigan at home, but I'm nervous that may be our only win in that stretch. Overall, I like Penn State to go 10-2 win the Big Ten East and head to the Indy again to go for the repeat. I think after a Big Ten Championship win Saquon will be accepting a trophy in NYC and Penn State will look to finally crack that Top 4 door. GAME BREAKDOWN: Sat, Sep 2 vs Akron W Sat, Sep 9 vs Pittsburgh W Sat, Sep 16 vs Georgia State W Sat, Sep 23 @ Iowa W Sat, Sep 30 vs Indiana W Sat, Oct 7 @ Northwestern L* Sat, Oct 21 vs Michigan W Sat, Oct 28 @ Ohio State L Sat, Nov 4 @ MI State W Sat, Nov 11 vs Rutgers W Sat, Nov 18 vs Nebraska W Sat, Nov 25 @ Maryland W *Just feel like there is going to be a random heartbreak on the road. An unconfirmed source has tipped Penn State Guide that Blake Shelton will be the headliner for the first ever Beaver Stadium Concert. The official announcement will be made tomorrow during the Iowa game. The concert will be the first in Beaver Stadium history and will take place on July 8th. Stick with Penn State Guide as more info becomes available.
Penn State defeated Ohio State in what was an absolute thriller this weekend. As Trace McSorely took the final knee to seal the game Beaver Stadium exploded in excitement as fans stormed the field. After leaving Beaver Stadium an estimated 10,000+ students took to Beaver Ave right off Penn State's campus to celebrate the win:
This was the scene:
Penn State students did a total of what is currently estimated at $30,000 damage, as light posts and street signs were damaged or torn down.
Riot Police eventually moved in to clear the streets:
Here is great video that shows most of the riot:
Penn State quietly announced it will honor the 50th Anniversary of Joe Paterno's first game as head coach of the Nittany Lions prior to the Temple game. Gopsusports.com lists the promotion as "Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Coach Paterno's first game as Penn State head coach". Details of the promotion have not yet been announced. Penn State has yet to recognize Paterno since his firing in 2011. Penn State kicks off vs Temple on Sept 17, at Noon. Penn State students have done it again, claiming over 21,200 football tickets to once again sell out the student section. The sellout comes as no surprise as Penn State has consistently sold out the student section over 4 decades! Penn State's home games include:Kent State (Sept. 3) and Temple (Sept. 17) in non-conference play as well as Minnesota (Oct. 1), Maryland (Oct. 8 - noon, Homecoming), Ohio State (Oct. 22 – 8 p.m.), Iowa (Nov. 5 – 7:30 p.m.) and Michigan State (Nov. 26, Senior Day) in-conference play, the first time we will play 5 in-conference games at home. Former Penn State kicker Sam Ficken will get another NFL shot with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced. Ficken will work out for the team Tuesday and Wednesday. The Jaguars have just one kicker on their roster, second year pro Jason Myers. Myers was 26 of 30 on field goals last season, but missed seven extra points Ficken attended minicamp for the Kansas City Chiefs last summer but was not signed. Ficken was very vocal on twitter throughout the season asking teams to give him a shot when a kicker would go on a cold streak. |
