If you rented a house in State College for a football weekend or graduation, you may be in for a nasty surprise. State College has started a crack down on short term house rentals and many rental houses have pulled their listings off HomeAway, VRBO and other popular short term rental sites. Even worse, some rentals have been cancelled by the owners rather than face potential fines. In these cases the renters receive all their money back but are left with no where to stay for a weekend that is often planned months in advance. Current regulations in State College prohibit short term rentals and the the town has been monitoring this activity since 2013. The borough is mainly focused on what it terms "tourist rentals" which it describes as houses that are never owner occupied and are rented for short periods, typically a single weekend. They are less concerned with short term rentals which are owner occupied homes that are occasionally rented for short periods. Once the borough officials determine that a house is a tourist house a letter is sent to the owner informing them that they must stop rental activity or face civil proceedings. The bottom line to all of this is that there are going to be a lot of Penn State fans scrambling to make other plans for their football weekends.
